6 Things to Consider When Choosing a Touchscreen Device

Oct 17, 2017

Whether it’s for personal or commercial use, a touchscreen device is an invaluable tool that can make your life easier. But with so many different types of touchscreen devices on the market, how do you know which one to choose? Well, we’re going to reveal six important things to consider when choosing one.

#1) Touchscreen Technology

First and foremost, you should consider the type of touch-sensing technology powering the device. The two most common technologies are capacitive and resistive, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. There are several other types of touch-sensing technology, however, including surface wave acoustic (SAW), infrared (IR) and more.

#2) Size

What size are you looking for? Touchscreen devices are available in a wide variety of sizes, ranging from small handheld devices to large 70-inch interfaces. Bigger touchscreen devices typically cost more than their smaller counterparts. However, they also provide a higher level of functionality and display quality.

#3) Water Resistance

If you plan on using the touchscreen device outdoors or in other environments where moisture is common, you should choose a device that’s water resistant. You can usually tell if a touchscreen device is water resistant by looking at its Ingress Protocol (IP) rating. This rating reveals the device’s susceptibility to the intrusion of dust and moisture.

#4) OS/Software

What type of operating system or software does the touchscreen device use? Google’s Android OS is a popular choice for touchscreen smartphones and tablets. However, it’s just one of many OS types used in touchscreen devices. The OS or software will play a key role in the device’s utility; therefore, you should choose an OS that you are comfortable and familiar using.

#5) Manufacturer

Who manufactured the touchscreen device? With the newfound popularity of touchscreen devices, more and more companies are now looking to capitalize on the trend by producing and releasing their own devices.  With that said, it’s usually a good idea to stick with a trusted manufacturer instead of a fly-by-night company.  They typically offer higher quality products while also backing their devices with warranties and guarantees.

#6) Features

Finally, consider the features of the touchscreen device. How long does the battery last? What type of ports does it have? What type of display resolution does it offer? These are all features that you should consider when choosing a touchscreen device.
