What are membrane switches?

The easiest way to understand what a membrane switch is, is to reference an all-time favorite device-the microwave.  The membrane switch on the microwave is the buttons—the human interface layer—that communicates to the microwave that you’d like to reheat your food for one minute.

 

A membrane switch consists of various layers laminated together.  The layers of a basic membrane switch construction include: a membrane overlay, spacer, printer circuit, rear adhesive, and tail filler.  Depending on the environment and requirements of the application into which the membrane switch plugs into, the construction can vary.  For example, if shielding is necessary, a two-circuit membrane switch design would be a better construction choice.

For more stringent environmental requirements, the printed silver circuit can be replaced with a copper and polyimide construction.  These construction designs are often called “Kapton” circuits and offer advantage with regard to current carrying capacity and better resistance to moisture.  You can explore more construction possibilities by downloading our membrane switch design guide or contacting us for support.

If you would like to backlight your application, the membrane switch construction would incorporate either light guides or LEDs for uniform lighting.  Other options for backlighting are fiber optic backlighting and EL backlighting.  Depending on the requirements of your application such as thickness preference, shape, environmental exposure, and other unique specifications, the backlighting options would vary and be selected specifically to fit the function of your device.  Using the latest LED powered lighting can reduce cost and reduce power used by a device.  Since many devices today are portable, this backlighting solution is more relevant than ever.

 

A variety of applications that use backlighting solutions are: remote controls, laboratory equipment, airplane dashboards, medical devices in dimly lit operating rooms, consumer appliances, such as coffee makers and microwaves, laptop keyboards, and many other applications that we all come in contact with daily or sporadically.

What industries use membrane switches?

There are a variety of industries that use membrane switch applications.  One example would be the medical industry.  Membrane switches for the medical industry must comply with strict FDA standards; they must be reliable, use high quality metal domes with correct plating, and eliminate crossover on circuits in extreme environments, as people’s lives literally depend on them.  The membrane keypads must be well sealed and moisture protected against liquid spills and cleaning solutions.  Some medical professionals prefer their medical devices to have lower tactile force but high tactile feel.  This requires good design and proper material selection in order for the latest dome designs to be successful.

Nelson-Miller started nearly 80 years ago here in Los Angeles when two brothers named Miller decided to form Miller Dial.  The

company started by making luminescent dials for the thriving, local aerospace industry.  Their reputation grew, and additional customers asked for both dials and nameplates.  About 10 years later, in 1946, Fred Nelson left Miller and formed a company of his own.  This company became Nelson Nameplate.  He opened a 1000 square foot facility and started making nameplates for various customers throughout the world.  Years passed, the world discovered plastic and we realized we could print conductive lines on these plastics, and then soon after came the membrane switch.  Both Nelson and Miller provided these switches to many industries across the country and throughout the world.  In 2011, the two companies decided we could be more effective as partners and merged forming Nelson-Miller.

 

We have a long history of working with our local government and environmental agencies to provide a safe and socially responsible workplace and workforce.  In 2003, we were recognized by the EPA with the Agency’s Environment Award of Outstanding Achievement.  The sitting Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, signed legislation at our facility implementing a First-in-the-Nation Green Chemistry Program.  We have maintained a strong partnership with FOLAR (Friends of the Los Angeles River) and help with their cleanup efforts each year.  This year we have sent a notification to our customers of our intent to move away from solvent printing and convert as much of our internal printing to Digital or UV inks.  We would like to thank our customers for their help with this changeover as they recognize this is just the right thing to do for our environment!

 

As time passes, the needs of our customers change and our focus has changed as well.  At one time we provided dials, then nameplates, then switches; today we provide solutions.  For some customers, our original products are still exactly what they need, but for others they now feel a touchscreen is the best way to use their machine.  For others, they may need an injection molded case with an integrated

In-Mold Label.  Today Nelson-Miller offers these things and many others.  This website is more of a “catalog of ideas” showing our major product offerings.  However, the main purpose for this, is to reintroduce Nelson-Miller as a company.  We are proud of our history, but we are no longer “the nameplate company” but instead a company here to help you in any way we can.  If you have not had one of our sales professionals at your facility in some time, we would love a chance to come in and show you some of the innovative solutions we have provided the last few years.  We are confident you will be both surprised and impressed by the New Nelson-Miller!
